Storm Pattern rugs are predominately woven in the Western
portion of the Navajo reservation. The complex design elements of this rug are very symbolic. There is always a
box in the center of the rug, which represents the spiritual center of the Navajo universe. From the center, four white zigzag lines, which represent lightning bolts, radiate to the boxes in each corner. These corner boxes are said to represent the houses of the four winds, or the four sacred mountains bordering the Navajo reservation. In between these boxes are geometric designs, which represent water and feathers. The whole design is enclosed by a border of solid black and two rows of intricate and narrow connected diamond shapes. This style rug is very popular with collectors. The Storm pattern is the only abstract Navajo design that is said to have symbolic meaning. There is a lot of very fine detail work in the border and all along the "lightning bolts" that radiate from the center. The unique feature of this rug is that it is woven in the traditional Two Grey Hills colors of black, white, three shades of brown and gray. The predominant background color is a soft brownish gray, which is best represented by the second and third pictures. The weave is very tight and we estimate the weft count to be 42. The rug lies flat on the floor and the corners do not curl. It is in pristine condition and is an excellent example of a traditional Storm Pattern weaving. The rug was woven by Navajo weaver L. Chee. |
