The Black Ogre (Nataska) is considered the "boogie man" of the Hopi children. They accompany the Monster Woman on their collection trip and travel in pairs. They make horrible noises and keep up a steady stamping of their feet. Children have heard scary stories of these monsters and children are actually petrified at their appearance.

The Nataska has a black case mask with large round pop eyes. The mask also has black carved horns with blue wavy markings. A mass of black braided horsehair hangs down from the top of the mask, which is topped by a bunch of fluff feathers. A fan of long carved turkey feathers are on the back of the mask, which makes the Kachina appear much taller and broader, adding to its menacing look.

The most distinguishing characteristic is the large black snout, exposing rows of saw-like teeth and red lips. He wears a carved buckskin around his shoulders as a cape, an a blue velvet shirt and jeans. He also wears a wide concho belt and a ceremonial Hopi sash. He wears knee-length moccasins with carved fringe over his blue jeans.  The Ogre carries a menacing saw in his right hand and a bow in his left hand.

The Kachina is carved from one piece of cottonwood, except for the fan of feathers, the horns and the items in the hands. Everything else is from a single piece of cottonwood. The carving is highly detailed and very well done.

This carving was created by Hopi artist Robert Allison. Robert was born in 1955 in Bacavi, Arizona and currently lives in Phoenix. Robert has been carving for over 15 years, and learned his craft from his uncle Orin Poley and his brother in law Edward Poleahla.

Robert has signed the doll: "Robert Allison, Black Ogre Kachina."
