Sarah Garcia is of the Turkey Clan of Acoma Pueblo.  She was born in 1928 in New Mexico and currently resides in Acoma Pueblo.  She has been actively potting since 1932 (yes age 4!) and specializes in a variety of traditional polychrome, Mimbres, Anasazi and Tularosa black on white ollas and vases.  She is the daughter of Maria Trujillo, a Laguna Potter, and the mother of Debbie Brown.

Sarah Garcia is considered one of the most prolific potters in Acoma, along with Jesse Garcia, Lucy Lewis and Marie Chino.  These four women were responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa style pottery.  Her pottery is designed with details of fine Mimbres and geometric patterns, including deer with heartlines, parrots, fish, clouds rain and lightning.

Sarah makes traditional Acoma pottery, entirely by hand.  She uses only natural materials, which are gathered from tribal lands.

Acoma clay is very special from all of the other Pueblos. In its natural state, it is dark gray and very dense. It must be ground to a fine powder before being mixed with temper. Acoma potters use ground pottery shards for their temper. The clay is so durable, that it can be rolled paper thin. This allows Acoma pot walls to be made extremely thin compared to the other Pueblos.  The pots are very lightweight, the lightest of all Pueblo pottery.

The pots are made from rolled clay which is coiled and shaped with special tools.  Before Sarah paints the designs, she applies a white liquid clay slip to the pots surface and polishes it with an heirloom stone.

After the surface is stone polished, the complex designs are painted, using a mixture of clay, water and natural stone pigments, called a slip. All of the pigments are from natural rocks, containing metallic oxides which are finely ground on a stone metate. The color of red or reddish orange is connected with the Southwest, the sun, summer and fertility.

The beautifully executed polychrome design features two identical patterns. Sarah uses evenly saturated natural pigment paints.  Every color used on this pot is made from all natural pigments.

The pot is new and in perfect condition.  It is signed on the bottom: "Sarah Garcia, Acoma, N. M.".
